#FNGHonoree: A Provider of Peace & Protection

Dawn Bradley-Fletcher-  Program Director of the New Orleans Women’s Shelter - A Provider of Peace and Protection

Dawn Bradley- Fletcher we would like to recognize you and all you do FOR NOLA GIRLS  to provide the women and children  of New Orleans with peaceful shelter and protection from homelessness and poverty.

Dont know  Dawn Bradley- Fletcher????

As Program Director for  The New Orleans Women’s Shelter’s (NOWS), Dawn assists transitioning families out of homelessness into a stable and productive lifestyles. NOWS  provides its residents a different way of life where their opinions are respected and they are given the consistent message that they can be successful in life.

As the program has developed and evolved, NOWS has continually sought to change the trajectory of homelessness. The women and residents who would otherwise have nowhere else to turn, are given support and access to living wage jobs, banking services, educational and parenting classes to move them from service clients to community citizens. The shelter is located in the Upper 9th Ward of New Orleans, and serves women from across the metropolitan area. NOWS can house 20 women and their children at any one time and averages an 80% occupancy rate. The majority of the residents live in the shelter for three to six months until they are ready to transition to private housing or independent living.

"We started the program believing that with support the women could begin to envision a different life for themselves and learn the skills to achieve that vision." Fletcher explains. There are other shelters for homeless women in the city which have a primary focus on substance abuse, domestic violence or mental illness. We are the only program which is exclusively designed for indigent women with a focus on providing the assistance needed to end the cycle of poverty and homeless for these young families who often bounce from one temporary chaotic living situation to the next. The toll taken on the children is school failure, limited social skills and most tragically a sense that the world is unpredictable and unsafe, that nurturance and promise of a productive future is beyond their grasp. NOWS aims to change the trajectory of these lives by giving the women a chance to set goals for their lives and provide the structure and assistance to make their hopes for the future a reality.

She added, “I would say that my love of makeup started as a little girl watching my mother put her makeup on. I loved the colors and the technique it took to make them work together.”

So in 2008, the Howard sisters decided that something had to be done with all this makeup love. “In 2008, after spending two years doing product research, we launched Magnolia Makeup,” said Niala. “We tested and perfected the products on ourselves first before we started developing them for consumers. We started making eye shadow colors first, and then added foundation colors. After we figured out the perfect foundations for us, family members started asking us for things and our products just grew from there.”n addition to creating new product lines, Niala and Tia also hold makeup classes and demonstrations teaching makeup techniques from very basic to advanced. In the future, the sisters would definitely love to have a storefront where all their products are made and sold.

And Niala and Tia are surely changing up the makeup world. Their great spirits and fantastic products in an awesome city is a recipe for success. Niala and Tia could truthfully be anywhere else in the country (world for that matter) and they choose to be here.
